How to: Create a table of contents.
Solution:
Select where the table of contents is to appear. Hide the field and paragraph codes. Select the 'Insert' menu and select 'Index and Tables...'. Click the 'Table of Contents' tab.
1) Position the insertion point where the table of contents is to appear. (Optional: Type a hard page break to create the table of contents on a separate page.)
2) Make sure that no field codes or hidden text are displayed.
a) Select the 'Tools' menu and select 'Options...'.
b) Click the 'View' tab.
c) Clear the 'Hidden Text' check box.
d) Clear the 'Field Codes' check box.
e) Click 'OK'.
3) From the 'Insert' menu select 'Index and Tables...'.
4) Click 'Table of Contents' tab.

5) Select a style from the 'Formats' list box. (The style will display in the Preview box.)

6) (Optional) Clear the 'Show Page Numbers' check box to remove page numbering after headings.
7) (Optional) Clear the 'Right Align Page Numbers' check box to show the page numbers immediately after headings.
8) Type the number of levels to display. (The maximum number of levels that can be shown is 9.)
9) (Optional) Select a tab leader from the 'Tab Leader' drop-down list box.
10 ) Click 'OK'.
